Right, let’s be honest, if you’ve ever stood staring at a bare window, tape measure in one hand and your phone in the other, thinking “I’ll just ask Alexa how to do this” … you’re not alone. Curtain measuring can feel like one of those jobs that should be simple but somehow end up being anything but.
Don’t worry, we’ve all been there (even us!), and that’s exactly why I’ve written this little guide. So, pop the kettle on, grab your notepad, and let’s walk it through together.
First things first, what are you measuring for?
Are we going for just curtains? Curtains and a blind combo? Or maybe a full transformation with new fabrics, linings, poles or tracks? The way you measure can vary depending on the look you’re after, so if you’re not quite sure yet, that’s perfectly fine. You’re more than welcome to pop into our Crewkerne shop for a chat (we love talking windows!).
Step 1: Measure the Width
Here’s the trick, don’t just measure the window itself. You’ll want to measure the track or pole the curtains will hang from.
If you already have a curtain pole:
- Measure the full width from end to end (excluding finials if they’re decorative).
- We recommend that your pole extends 15-30cm past the window frame on each side, to make sure the curtains can pull right back and let the light in.
If you’re using a curtain track:
- Measure the full length of the track.
- If it’s a track that bends around a bay window, measure the full length including the bends.
Don’t stretch the tape across with one hand and guess. Get someone to hold the other end or treat yourself to one of those extendable metal tape measures (they’re much easier than floppy sewing ones!).
Step 2: Measure the Drop
This is where most people get a bit flustered, but it’s actually quite straightforward. First, decide how high you’d like the curtains to hang from:
Pole or Track Position:
We always say, the higher the better! Fixing your pole or track 15cm or more above the window gives the illusion of height and makes your room feel more elegant.
Now for the drop (or length) you’ve got three popular options:
- Sill length – curtains finish just above the window sill (ideal for kitchens or smaller windows)
- Below sill – a few inches below the sill, giving a fuller look
- Floor length – long and luxurious, brushing or just kissing the floor
Measure from the top of the track or pole to where you want the curtain to end. For poles, measure from the eye of the curtain ring (that’s the little bit it hangs from), not the top of the pole itself.
Don’t forget to check for radiators or furniture under the window! You don’t want beautiful floor-length curtains blocking your heating or bunching up against a chest of drawers.
