Our curtains and blinds make a big impact on our homes and the decor, we want them to look their best but it can be a headache getting cleaning them right without ruining the fabric how they fit and hang. With our easy steps you’ll have them back to new in no time.
So let’s get started, there are so many tips, tricks or routines we learn from families or friends and over the years we lose sight of what really works without damaging or over doing it.
Cleaning our floors and window sills is the best start, by regularly dusting and vacuuming it’ll help keep your curtain linings free from dust and dirt. The bottom edges of your curtains are the first to show up any dirt because of their placement. So, make sure these areas are regularly cleaned.
Dust is a pain but there is an easy solution, all lined curtains and fabric blinds can be cleaned with your vacuum cleaner. Use the small brush attachment which is also designed for your furniture and upholstery. Close your curtains or drop the blind fully and gently brush over the front, working your way from the top to the bottom, paying extra attention to the edges and then repeat this process on the lining.
Steaming is a great way to get wrinkles out of your curtains or blinds. Once again start with them fully closed and clean down as above with your vacuum first. Set your steamer to warm and when it has reached its correct heat move it over your curtains or blinds on the lining side. Starting at the top and work your way down in large sweeping movements. For velvet fabrics you will want to ONLY steam the lining side, for other fabrics you can steam the fronts too. Whilst your curtains or blinds are slightly damp you can finish off the look by smoothing out any creases and creating neat folds.
The dreaded mould! A problem many houses in the UK suffer from. If windows suffer from condensation, this could result in mould building up on the lining of your curtains or blinds. Make sure your rooms are always well ventilated, opening a window can help reduce the spread of mold. You could invest in a dehumidifier or consider renewing your windows to reduce droughts and retain heat.
If you’ve got some stubborn stains on your curtains or blinds then you can try rubbing the affected area gently with a clean cloth soaked in warm water, avoid using detergents or stain removers as this may effect the color of your fabrics.
We hope these tips help you keep your curtains and blinds looking fantastic. For specific advice do pop into our shop at 7 East Street, Crewkerne…we are always happy to chat about curtains and blinds!
