- Step 1: Measure the Width
Take your tape measure and measure the width of your window or door frame. Start from one side and extend it to the other. Make sure to measure at three points: the top, middle, and bottom. Write down the widest measurement you get. This will ensure your curtains or blinds cover the entire width nicely.
- Step 2: Measure the Drop
Now, let’s measure the drop, which is how long you want your curtains or blinds to be. For curtains, decide if you want them to hang to the sill, below the sill, or all the way to the floor. For blinds, measure from where you want the top of the blind to be down to your desired length.
Again, measure at three points: the left side, the middle, and the right side. Note down the longest measurement. This ensures your curtains or blinds will hang evenly.
- Step 3: Consider Additional Space
If you’re hanging curtains, you might want them to overlap slightly at the sides and have some extra fabric at the top for a stylish look. For blinds, consider any obstructions like window handles or locks and make sure your blinds won’t interfere with them when opening and closing.
- Step 4: Bay Windows? No Problem!
If you have bay windows, measure each section individually as if it were a regular window. Take note of any angles or corners and measure accordingly. Don’t worry, it’s easier than it sounds!
- Step 5: Double-Check Everything
Before you get too excited, double-check all your measurements. It’s better to be safe than sorry, trust me!
